VALPARAISO LEADS SUMMER RECYCLING EVENT
Bring in your files,
electronics, fluorescent bulbs!
The city of Valparaiso is turning up the heat on
its recycling efforts with a special summer
recycling event for both businesses and
residents. The “Green Days” event offers new
opportunities for recycling. Businesses and
residents can bring their paper files for
shredding and recycling, as well as electronic
trash (that broken printer, your old computer…),
and discarded fluorescent light bulbs and tubes.
“Green Days” has the support of Valparaiso
Wal-Mart which is leading efforts to recycle
plastic bags and promote the use of reusable
shopping bags, as well as Opportunity
Enterprises which will assist by providing
confidential paper shredding and recycling.
“We want this event to inspire people and
businesses to clean out their offices and
storage rooms, and to begin thinking of
recycling year-round,” said Bill Oeding,
Director of Public Works for Valparaiso. “So
many of us recycle our newspaper, but stop when
it comes to our office materials. Here’s a way
to extend good habits throughout our whole day,”
he said.
“GREEN DAYS” RECYCLING EVENT
July 18, noon to 5:00 pm and July 19, 8:00 am to
noon City parking lot at Indiana Avenue and
Lafayette Street across from the County
Administration Building, 155 Indiana Ave.
Accepting:
Paper files for shredding and recycling
Discarded electronics
Fluorescent tubes and bulbs
SHOPPING BAG SWAP
Stop by the “Green Days” Recycling and get free
reusable shopping bags! Receive a free reusable
bag for every 10 plastic bags you turn in – up
to 5 reusable bags per family,
while quantities last. Wal-Mart will partner
with the city on this effort to collect and
recycle plastic as it continues to encourage the
community to use reusable shopping bags.
Details of this “Green
Days” event continue to evolve. For
up-to-the-minute information, visit the city’s
web site at
www.valpo.us, and
click on “Public Works.”
The city of Valparaiso is taking a leadership
role in recycling and environmental efforts. The
city currently diverts 49% of its waste from
landfills through recycling. Valparaiso is also
using bio fuels in the city’s vehicles, and
fostering many other environmental efforts such
as building pathways, introducing public
transportation, and incorporating energy
efficient materials and equipment.
