It was a gift in memory of a pioneer Valparaiso surgeon that led to the creation of the first county hospital in Porter County 60 years ago: Porter. When the family of D.J. Loring, M.D., gave a $25,000 trust to the county on the condition that it be used to construct a county hospital, Porter County voters agreed it was time to build a new, modern hospital in Valparaiso with their financial support. On December 9, 1939, Porter opened its doors for patient care services for the first time. Construction on the 48-bed hospital, paid for through Dr. Loring’s trust as well as a county bond issue and a federal grant, totaled $263,000.

Nearly seven decades later, Porter is still making history. We’ve grown from a single hospital into a privately owned, health system with facilities across Porter County and into the surrounding areas.

Porter is comprised of the Valparaiso Hospital Campus; the Portage Hospital Campus; the Valparaiso Outpatient Campus; the Chesterton Medical Campus; the Education and Rehabilitation Campus; the Hebron Medical Campus; the Northwest Indiana Oncology Center, the DeMotte Medical Campus, Northwest Indiana PET/CT, Porter Sleep Disorders Institute, and Chandana Surgery Center at Porter.

Additionally, Porter is known for several centers of excellence including the Porter Cardiac and Vascular Institute, Porter Joint Replacement Center, and Porter New Beginnings which includes obstetrics, newborn and neonatal intensive care services.
