Valparaiso History

The State of Indiana was known as Indian territory because it was a rendezvous point for many Indian Tribes. The first pioneers ventured through this area about 1670. The first settler in the area was a French-Canadian named Joseph Bailley, who in 1822 established a thriving fur post on the shore of Lake Michigan about 12 miles north of now Valparaiso. The site of the present City of Valparaiso was included in purchase of the land from the Potawatomi Indians by the U.S. Government in October 1832. Learn more about the history of Valparaiso >

Present-day Valparaiso

Present-day Valparaiso is located approximately 50 miles east of Chicago with easy access to I-94, I-80, and I-90 and I-65 via Indiana Bypass 49 and US 30. For its size of 25,500 people, it has much to offer the business community including a variety of quality educational choices, a pro-business climate, and a team approach by the public and private sector to make new businesses feel at home.

Buildings & Development Opportunities

Valparaiso has a variety of quality buildings, and greenfield sites ready for development. These sites are located along the 49 Bypass, both north and south of US 30. Some sites are already developed as industrial/commercial parks that are subdivided with all infrastructure in place. Some parks are located near the Porter County Airport for easy access to business air service.

Business Community

Valparaiso has developed a balanced business community that currently includes international companies that produce parts for the computer age, and a national company that makes Orville Redenbacher popcorn. These companies and many more have found the Hoosier work ethic exceptional, and the cost of doing business in Indiana modified by state incentives, and a frozen tax levy.

Valparaiso Amenities

The amenities of the City of Valparaiso include the nationally acclaimed Valparaiso University, which has repeatedly been rated a top university in the Midwest. The Valparaiso Community School system also is rated one of the best. Notre Dame, Purdue and Indiana University campuses are close by. The city also offers competitive outpatient health care, up-to-date hospital facilities, and an outstanding system of local parks with programs for all ages.

Twenty minutes to the north of the city is Lake Michigan with state and national parks, and passenger service via train to Chicago and South Bend.
